Job Description:


Save the Children strives to give children in Afghanistan the chance to be heard and to tell their story. On the issues that matter to children, we want to shape policies, influence public opinion and raise funds to improve children’s lives. Communications and media are important platforms for achieving this.

The successful candidate will report to and work in collaboration with the Director of Advocacy, Communications, Campaigns and Media (ACCM) to ensure coverage of high-profile issues and crises across Afghanistan, harnessing the power of national and international media to help us achieve our advocacy, campaign, brand, programmatic and fundraising goals.

The Media and Content Manager will work closely with our programme teams to collect powerful content, provide training for communications focal points, develop media materials and lead on the development of national media strategies. They will also work closely with the Asia Regional Officer Regional Media Manager to proactively identify new story ideas.



  • In coordination with the ACCM Director, lead Save the Children’s media work on Afghanistan, responding to journalist inquiries and being the organisation’s media focal point in the region
  • Develop, facilitate sign off for and distribute a range of media materials including press releases, b-roll packs, case studies, photos, Q&As, key messages, red lines and blogs/op-eds
  • Identify media moments and under-reported stories in Afghanistan, and develop plans and strategies to reach high profile media outlets
  • Support media and Save the Children Member trips to visit programmes and ensure child safeguarding protocols are upheld
  • Act as a spokesperson for national media outlets for Save the Children in Afghanistan
  • Build and maintain strong relations with key journalists and editors across Afghanistan, including regional correspondents of international media, regional media and leading national media


  • Lead in pro-actively identifying and collecting case studies and success stories (including photo and video content) from programs across nine provinces by building close relations with teams across the organisation and staying abreast of all activities.
  • Collect photos, video and case studies to support our media work, following briefs provided by the ACCM Director and global media colleagues.
  • Support in documenting, managing and sharing lessons learned, success stories and case studies for a range of internal and external stakeholder audiences, ensuring messages achieve maximum impact and are consistent with Save the Children’s brand.


  • In coordination with the Communications Manager, train communications focal points in provincial field offices and support them to collect content; photo, video and interviews to support Save the Children’s communications goals.

Support the Communications Manager in developing content, strategy and an approach for internal and external social media strategies.

Job Requirements:


  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, public relations or relevant field.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a similar role.
  • Experience engaging with national and local media in Afghanistan
  • Excellent photography and video skills.
  • Strong knowledge of communication practices and techniques.
  • Outstanding written skills and the ability to produce compelling media products such as press releases, key messages/speaking points and Q&As
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Excellent communication skills with a high level of written and spoken English and Dari (Pashto also highly preferred);
  • Ability to travel and spend time in field locations if/when needed;
  • Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s aims, values and principles;
  • Wide understanding of advocacy and policy issues in Afghanistan, especially in relation to children protection;
  • Good conceptual and analytical thinking, and good attention to detail.


  • Experience working with NGOs
  • Uzbek language skills.
  • Knowledge and experience of editing videos with Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro.
  • Photo editing skills with Photoshop or Lightroom.
  • Experience using an asset management database.
