Job Summary

The Field Engineer will report to the Regional Area Manager with day-to-day technical support and guidance from the UNDP Technical Associate (Infrastructure) in Kandahar.

Duties & Responsibilities

Scope of work:

The Field Engineer plays a vital role in supporting Technical Associate in challenging environments, where UNDP staff cannot go regularly. This role requires a combination of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and adaptability. By fulfilling indicatory parameters of implemented projects

i. Support effective and day to day QA/QC monitoring of infrastructure projects such as check dams in Helmand, Zabul and Kandahar provinces under ABADEI program.

• The Field Engineer will be responsible for conducting regular site visits to remote and inaccessible locations in the 3 provinces. This includes quality assurance, quality control and monitoring of infrastructure projects, or any other relevant field activities.

• The field engineer will assess the progress, identify potential challenges, resolve the challenges and report back to the Technical Associate for further action.

ii. Contribute to establish an effective Data Collection & Reporting System

• The Field Engineer will be responsible for collecting relevant data, such as site measurements, material specifications, and progress reports. This information will be used to track project milestones, identify bottlenecks, and ensure compliance with established standards.

iii. Conducting required Joint Measurement and Inspections

• The field engineer will be responsible to conduct site inspection such as pre-final, final and follow up inspections based on RP/Contractor’s request

• Coordinate handover of completed sites to the community with guidance from Area Manager

iv. Participate in site assessment and project site selection.

• Field Engineer will conduct site assessments and site selection for review and approval by Technical Associate. This involves evaluating the feasibility of a proposed project, analyzing the existing infrastructure, and identifying potential risks or constraints.

• The Field Engineer will collaborate with the Technical Associate to provide accurate and comprehensive assessments for informed decision-making.

• The Field Engineer will work closely with the technical associate to ensure that projects are aligned with the organization’s goals and objectives.

• Any other tasks as assigned by the Area Manager.

Payment: Monthly bases

Travel: Salary is inclusive of travel and DSA costs

Duration of the assignment: 3 months

Duty station: Southern Region

Job Requirements

Experience and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree Civil Engineering, infrastructure management from a nationally recognized education institution

Experience and Skills:

• 5-7 years of experience with bachelor’s degree and 3 years of experience with Masters

• Previous experience of working with UN and or NGOs, is required.

• Experience monitoring community-based infrastructure projects is required.

• Specific experience in the design and construction supervision of Check Dams, and hydraulic structure is a requirement.

• Experience working in Afghanistan context particularly coordinating local contractors.

• Good analytical skills and writing skills.

• Experience working in conflict or transition context.

• Knowledge and experience in the usage of engineering software such as GIS, Auto CAD…etc. and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.)

Competencies: 

• Ability to speak, read and write technical and conversational English.

• Ability to understand new terminology and concepts easily and to synthesize information from different sources into a coherent project document.

• Skill in negotiating effectively in sensitive situations.

• Skill in achieving results through persuading, influencing, and working with others.

• Skill in facilitating meetings effectively and efficiently and to resolve conflicts as they arise.

• Good team player, self-starter, has ability to work under minimum supervision and maintain good relationships.

Language Requirements:

Proficiency in written and spoken English and fluency in the national languages (Dari / Pashto).
