About Afghan Midwives Association:

The AMA is the technical body for midwifery education, professional development and policies that enable every midwife in Afghanistan so midwives can practice the highest level of care for the mothers and new born of the country. The AMA is a member of key national and international forums. For example, AMA is an active member of the Human Resource Development Task Force, National Reproductive Health Task Force, The Maternal New born Health committee, Afghanistan Midwifery & Nursing Education and Accreditation Board, Afghan Women Network and Secretariat for National Nursing and Midwifery Steering Committee. Similarly, at regional and international level AMA is an active member of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), White Ribbon Alliance (WRA) for the safe motherhood and women empowerment; also member of the Asia Midwifery Regional Resource Centre.

Job Description:

The overall purpose of this position is to technical support and on-the-job mentoring the new graduated midwives and poor skilled midwives in targeted health facilities. For improvements of midwifery quality services, she will focuses on midwives capacities building in their HFs.

Responsibilities of Clinical Mentor:

  • Implement the assigned responsibilities under the direction of the MSH-provincial performance officer and AMA Office.
  • Maintain strong partnerships with the MSH-provincial performance officer, provincial Reproductive Health department (RH) and partner organizations to advocate for resource mobilization and support of midwives in their work area.
  • Conduct the baseline assessment to address the gaps in the mentee’s performance.
  • Conduct regular on-the-job mentoring through clinical consultation, assisting to problem-solve and helping them with direct patient care as needed to newly graduated midwives and midwives with poor skill at specific professional midwifery skills.
  • Develop an action plan for mentees based on gaps analysis to address the gaps in mentees’ performance.
  • Communication with the mentee and head of the clinic to make an enabling environment for the mentee and set the daily target for each learning session.
  • Filling the mentorship tools based on actual data or information.
  • The clinical mentor will use guidance from mentorship tools and methodology and provide high-quality services on the terms and conditions of mentorship project implementation.
  • Promote and encourage mentees to provide services according to national standards and guidelines.
  • Documents/attendance sheet, tools and report shall include the total number of days worked and a brief description of services provided for each visit.
  • Role model behavior and practices (e.g. Respectful Maternity Care)
  • Ensure adequate and organized record keeping of activities including mentoring plans, implementation progress, mentoring visits, completed tools, attendance sheets and other related documents shall record at the targeted HFs.
  • Share records with the AMA office after the completion of each visit. Provide and submit timely reports as required including key issues, achievements, successes, challenges and lessons learned with the AMA office, MSH-provincial performance officer and AMA focal point.
  • Follow up on the gaps in each visit to ensure the improvement of the findings.
  • Regular coordination and communication with MSH-provincial performance officer and AMA focal point.
  • Attend to RMNCAH committee meetings with the provincial focal point and provide the progress of mentorship in targeted health facilities based on need.
  • Conduct the end-line assessment to measure the progress in improving the midwife’s performance.
  • Participate in mentors’ Meetings.
  • Participate in mentorship training and technical updates to ensure the knowledge, skills and competencies are current and ensure competence in technical and mentoring skills.

Job Requirements:

  • Graduated from the approved Afghanistan Midwifery Program recognized by the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) or Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).
  • Must be a committed member of AMA.
  • At least 5 years of clinical experience in maternal, new-born health and family planning.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a clinical midwifery trainer.
  • Previous experience in competency-based training and supportive supervisory roles is an advantage.
  • Update knowledge on Quality assurance, BEmoNC and ETS.
  • Strong communication and team-building skills.
  • Proficient in clinical decision-making skills.
  • Ability to promote a positive work environment between relevant midwives and their workplace.
  • Ability to create positive change in knowledge, skills, behavior’s, and attitude of midwives in targeted FHs during mentorship cycles.
  • Excellent writing, analytical and communication skills in Dari, Pashtu and English is will prefer.
  • Having model professional behavior’s attitudes and appearance consistent with international midwifery standards.
  • Having a strong commitment to the midwifery profession.
  • Ability to work in a rural area.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Committed and willing to travel in rural areas in the country.
