Afghanistan is one of the world’s most vulnerable countries in terms of education gender equality, social cohesion, resilience, livelihoods, community security, and rule of law. In 2021 the Kabul government has overthrown by the Taliban, and the human rights and humanitarian situation is in social, political, and economic straits Afghan women have become politically, and socially marginalized, and economically the most vulnerable to physical and social gender-based violence, education denial, job, and food security, and cultural discrimination. In response to this situation, HRWMO will attempt to change deeply entrenched community norms that accepting violence against women as ‘normal’ is a formidable task that often invites confrontation.
Even as legal solutions are pursued, civil society women’s organizations and other groups all over the world recognize the essential role the community plays in perpetuating and promoting gender inequality and violence. Attitudes and biases that support violence against women are created, sustained, and played out at the community level by doing direct mediation between the families. Practical steps must be taken to ensure victims/survivors are safe and receive the support and services that they need now. This includes proactive efforts to integrate measures in all social restrictions-related preparedness and recovery plans to address violence against women and girls and ensure that these efforts are adequately resourced. The sad reality that violence against women and children often co-occurs and intersects in many other ways merits attention to ensure prevention and response strategies are coherent and can impact both.
