Opportunity Description

Scotland’s British Council, the SGSAH EARTH Scholarships program, which the British Council funds, enables international research collaborations between Ph.D. and Early Career Researchers, Scottish HEIs, academic mentors based in Scotland, and outside organizations. Its focus is on environmental arts and humanities and their interdisciplinary connections.

The program’s overarching goal is to highlight the contributions and interventions made by the arts, culture, and humanities fields in tackling the climate emergency and their ability for interdisciplinary research in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) contexts. In addition to supporting sustainable research and cultural exchanges within and outside the arts, humanities, and cultural sectors, the program will foster opportunities for international research and mobility that will help develop and support new strategies for addressing the world’s climate crisis.

Program Information

The guiding concepts of this program complement SGSAH’s goals and initiatives for internationalization and are consistent with SGSAH’s GREEN/GRADUATE Strategy and Operational Plan and the legacy Climate Connections program of the British Council. The Environmental Humanities and Creative Industries/Economies, with an emphasis on climate emergency themes, the interventions of the arts and cultural sector, and the legacy of COP26, held in Glasgow in 2021, will serve as the program’s two strategic topics and critical areas. Building on SGSAH’s Global Connects programs and the SFC Saltire Emerging Researcher Program; the program will strengthen partnerships between Scottish and foreign HEIs (Higher Education institute)

For up to three months in 2023, the initiative will offer scholarships to Ph.D. and Early Career Researchers from outside the UK who wish to conduct in-person and hybrid interactions in Scotland in the fields of environmental arts and humanities. In April 2023, the research assignments grantees will join with academics from Scotland to network and cooperate as part of a 2-week core leadership program, supported by several Clusters that are regionally and thematically focused.

Important Details

Organized by: Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities (SGSAH)
Deadline: 7 November 2022
Announcing date: 12 December 2022
Host Country: Scotland
Duration: up to three months
Eligible Country: International

The EARTH Scholarships will utilize the three geographically and thematically organized Clusters, which will provide research assignments, chances for researcher training and growth, and support cohort training in April 2023. Using the Clusters, you can:

  • Greater understanding of and study of environmental humanities and artistic disciplines in Scotland.
  • Interdisciplinary work in and outside the humanities and arts (STEAM).
  • Excursions and interactions with academics, professionals, and practitioners.
  • Access to organizations, resources, knowledge, and experience in the arts and culture sector in many geographic locations, including urban and rural areas.

  • The program is for Ph.D. and early career researchers (ECRs) working in the environmental arts and humanities who are registered at or graduated from any non-UK institution to travel to Scotland in 2023 to work with a mentor and use the networks and resources of a host HEI (Higher Education Institute).
  • All candidates must be either enrolled in or have already completed a Ph.D. program in an area generally considered to be in the arts and humanities. The AHRC provides more information on these topics. Additionally, research projects must address issues in the arts and humanities. For all multidisciplinary PhDs, the arts and humanities must account for at least 50% of the project. The program actively encourages research project submissions using interdisciplinarity methods outside of the Arts & Humanities.
  • For the Program, ECRs must be within one year after receiving notice that their Ph.D. was awarded (in rare cases, this deadline may be extended to two years).
